Well written & unique idea for fantasy. Caribou listens to her dreams to help her people. Even tho they often scorn her, she still has a big heart and helps them.
I like how pieces of the setting & life skills of the people fits with what I imagine living in Finland or similar areas would be like. I found myself wondering what it would have been like to be the first people populating the North American continent from the north. Pierce has a strong grasp of tools needed by a primitive culture: describes a winch & tackle "such as workers might raise a roof beam with" (p 171). How many authors know about raising roof beams? Or making cordage from leather? ( )

A very interesting story. A shapeshifter story without wolves. The plot and atmosphere of the story is intriguing and interesting giving the impression of a mythology and history filled world. Certainly a nice read. ( )
