Fiction. Literature. Romance. HTML:From Peter Mayle, a wonderful new novel steeped in wineâ??and the business of wine?and set in, bien sûr, Provence.

Max Skinner is not exactly setting the London financial world on fire?and when his supervisor steals his biggest client, itâ??s definitely time to inspect the vineyard in Provence that his recently departed uncle left him. Heartily and happily distracted upon his arrival by the landscape, the weather, and the food?not to mention the gorgeous notaire handling the estate and the stunning owner of the local bistro?Max almost forgets about his inherited property.

Which might have been a good idea, because the wine produced there is swill. But then why, Max has to wonder, is his caretaker so anxious to acquire the land? When a beautiful young woman from California arrives with what might be a legitimate claim on the estate, and knowledge of vineyards that far outstrips Maxâ??s own, the plot begins its twists and turns into and out of truly wonderful complications and resolutions.

This is luscious reading?soothing us with the sensual wonders of Provence while it tells a fascinating tale of the hugely lucrative and competitive boutique-wine trade. It is Peter Mayleâ??s most satisfying, most delecta

I registered this book at BookCrossing.com!

This is one of the fluffiest things I've read in a long while. I did not realize what it was, really, when I took it. It makes sense that it has been made into a film because it reads that way. A basic simple plot, not very long. You wouldn't even have to leave anything out.

On the back it calls Mayle "the world's foremost literary escape artist". I am guessing that that means he writes about places that we might want to escape to and has mild experiences that we might like to have, too.

There is a lot of emphasis on what the characters eat and drink. I think I would not feel well after drinking so much wine and eating so much heavy food. Of course we all know that the French generally eat a lot less of these foods and that's why they aren't all fat. And they tend to be more active in general. In this story the characters really seem to overload on everything.

The story is about a young man who goes to France because he inherited property with wine grapes and a large house. As he goes about repairing what was not maintained well, he meets locals and even hosts a surprise guest for a while. In a way it's like a travel journal. There is a bit of a setback, a crisis of sorts, that has to be resolved, but overall the book is just fluffy.

It's clearly not the type book I like to read and I will be wary about picking up anything similar in the future. ( )

Short, feel good, well constructed and full of Southern French culture. Really lovely, would read more of these. ( )

Tre stelle perché nonostante la trama sia scorrevole la fine risulta un po' troppo affrettata.
Consigliato: ni... proverò a vedere il film. ( )

It was high summer in London, and the raindrops felt almost warm on Max Skinner's face as he ran up Rutland Gate and into Hyde Park.
