I rarely stay up late into the night to find out what happens in a book, but this one is so well written that I was hooked. I couldn't wait to find out what happened to the hero, Jeff Randall. He is branded on the chest with a D, signifying an Army deserter. The story of his disfigurement is revealed later in the book. He meets the daughter of the base commander, a major who has a heart condition and is planning retirement. The fast-paced story holds the reader till the end, which left me totally unsatisfied. I am a "hero gets the girl and lives happily ever after" type, and this sudden ending is a big letdown. The author leaves the true ending up to the reader, and I hate that! Randall is just going to ride away without even saying goodbye to the girl? It was odd, and I had to check the binding to see if another, final chapter was missing. But, if you like to, in effect, write your own ending, this book is an ideal platform. I just wanted finality from the author, but didn't get it. But, as an exciting read, it is great!
