What's not to like about Pigeon? He's a bit tricky for a storytime read, but the kids LOVED it. ( )

In all honesty, I did not enjoy this picture storybook. It has a Scholastic Readability level of PreK-K. The illustrations lack detail and style, which makes them boring in my opinion. The story is about a pigeon who really wants a puppy, but he knows nothing about owning a puppy. He believes that he can only water it once a month and give it plenty of sunlight. When the pigeon finally receives the puppy, he realizes that puppies are usually bigger than the pigeon is, slobbery, hairy, have teeth, and claws. After realizing this, the pigeon changes his mind and wants a walrus. This story could be used to teach students the importance of learning more about something before we ask for it. Pets are a big responsibility, so we have to be fully ready to take care of them by understanding their needs. It also has a good moral lesson of being careful what you wish for, which is likely how I would use the story in my classroom. However, I doubt if I will ever use it. ( )

I read this for the "Published When You Were 20" part of my 2020 reading challenge. It was simple and cute, just like the rest of the series. ( )

This book was fantastic for guided reading, I used this book with both my elementary student and my middle school English language learning student. I had the students choral read aloud with me, making sure to have them read with the correct tone of voice since it can be inferred from text cues such as color, and size. This book allowed me to ask my student deeper questions such as "how is the pigeon feeling here?" or "what is the pigeon's problem." It allows for the students to read for meaning and think beyond the text, especially using the picture and text cues to help them think about these questions. This book is great for younger and older students as they can connect to the text on different levels, making meaning through the cues for reading, the prompting questions, and laughing as the silliness of how unrealistic the story is. The pigeon books by Mo Willems would be great mentor books for writing. He uses bubbles to show that the characters are talking. He also uses a lot of exclamation marks to show the pigeon's expressions. I think it is interesting how he uses large and small bubbles. It makes me think the large bubbles are LOUD! The small bubbles are more of a quieter noise. ( )

The Pigeon Wants a Puppy is one of many of my favorite children's books. Mo Willems created such a funny character. I can't help but feel the expression written throughout this book. "I'm a puppy-lovin' pigeon!" That is my favorite line in the story. I think that is hilarious. I just can't help but laugh. The pigeon is brought to life for me. The illustrations are cute too. ( )

I silly, fun book for young readers about a pigeon who wants nothing more than a puppy. Or does he? Illustrations are sweet and simple, yet display so much emotion. ( )

This guided reading book is unique and would be a great book for all young children to experience. "The Pigeon Wants a Puppy" is a book where the main character speaks in dialogue, directly to the reader, throughout the entire story. The main character infers what the reader is thinking and responds appropriately. This book is about a pigeon who thinks that they want a puppy and insists on getting one until they come into contact with a puppy and realize that they don't like the scary features that the puppy obtains. The pigeon then changes their mind and wants a walrus instead. This would be a good book to share with young children who are stubborn/hard headed because it would teach them that often times, what they are so passionate about is not truly what it seems, and a better alternative may be available, if they are willing to accept it. This book would also be appropriate to use for beginning/struggling readers, as it contains large font and short, simple sentences. ( )

This book is a picture book about a pigeon who talks about how he wants a puppy. The pigeon goes through why he wants it and how he would take care of it. In the end he sees how big a puppy is compared to him and decides that he does not want a puppy anymore. The book is interesting because it is told as if the pigeon is having a conversation with the reader. This book would be a good book to use with younger readers or struggling readers because it uses large letters and shorter phrases. This book would be good to use with students who are just learning to how to read, so it would be a good starter book for students.

Fun and entertaining collection of books revolving a pigeon and his dialogue in getting through his life. The pigeon wants a puppy in this book and the author uses his dialogue and fun mannerisms to make the story entertaining and easier to read for kids. The pictures and less syntactically complex writing makes this book easy and fun for kids most ages.

This is a book about a pigeon and all the pigeon wants is a puppy. This is a good shared reading book because the pigeon is talking right to you. By having a character speaking to the audience you can teach through this book different types of narrators and voice that can appear in writing.

I love the entire series of pigeon books, especially this one. The main character in this book is the pigeon, which is hilarious! In this book the pigeon is believable, even though a talking pigeon doesn't exist. Each page contains the pigeon being silly begging for something new. I like the character so much in this book because although he's a pigeon, children are easily able to relate to the pigeon and the way he acts. The writing in this book is great because it's well-paced but has you wanting to turn each page because you're dying to know what's next! The big picture in this story is what you desire, may not always be realistic, like when the pigeon realized how big the dog actually was.. especially his teeth! ( )

Pigeon wants a puppy.
Pigeon wants to drive a bus.
Pigeon wants to eat a whole hot dog.
Pigeon wants to stay up late.

Well, Pigeon wants a lot of stuff now, doesn't he? Pigeon has a large sense of entitlement now, doesn't he? Well, we want Pigeon to be happy now, don't we? We can't deny him anything now, can we? Would that break his little bird-heart to be told every now and then that he should have to work in order to get good things?

Wow. Pigeon is one self-entitled bird. I'm not certain if books like these are the right thing to be giving children. Actually, I'm fairly certain that they aren't. Pigeon realizes the gravity of his mistake only after guilt tripping the reader into getting him a puppy and then immediately latches on to the next "fad."

It's things like this and Elmo that are turning our anklebiters into annoying needy creatures.

Man. ( )

Not as good as the other pigeon books. It was OK but not that funny. ( )

This pigeon book reminded us of our experience with our puppy Agnes. Of course, we didn't opt out nor did we give her back. We're learning to live with our puppy! ( )

What is the pigeon up to now?! The pigeon now wants a puppy. He says that he will "take care of it and water it once a month." He really wants one bad. Should we let him have one? Finally, he gets to see a puppy, but he changes his mind. He thinks the puppy is too big and its teeth are too big. The pigeon now wants a walrus. This sure is an interesting pigeon. ( )

This is a great book to use for persuasive writing. Pigeon really wants a puppy. He tries to persuade the reader throughout the book to get him a puppy. But when he finally gets a puppy, he realizes puppies are not what he was expecting. The big teeth, slobber, and size is too much for pigeon. He decides that he would like a walrus instead.

This is a cute book that has the main character break the third wall and speak with the reader. The text is large, but is short, which is beneficial to beginning readers. There are some more advanced words that are introduced to the reader. Kids seem to be really excited about this book even if they can't read it (well). This would be a good book to provide for students for silent reading. This could be used to teach dialogue to students because the entire book is dialogue. ( )

Another amazing book by Mo Williams! I liked this one a lot because I always want another puppy! This book has great illustrations and is really fun in that it interacts with the reader. The story is about how a Pigeon really wants a puppy and tries to convince you, the reader, to let him get one. He makes funny jokes about how he would take good care of it by watering it once a month, and other ridiculous things. It ends with the pigeon wanting a Walrus!
Genre: Fantasy
Media: Animated
Uses: compare and contrast other Pigeon novels, Why won't the pigeon not take no for an answer? ( )

I had thought I had read all the Pigeon books but one of my students brought this one in from the library and of course it's amazing. Mo Willems can do no wrong in my eyes! It's the same format as his other pigeon books; that pigeon always wants something! And this time he wants a puppy. He talks in speech bubbles and begs the reader to let him have this dog. He promises to give it water and sunlight! It's so much fun for kids and adults just as Willem's other books are. It is easy enough for my 1st graders to read but the humor is well written even for adults. ( )

This comic style picture book is a super fun story that gets kids involved by asking them questions and waiting for a response. It has short phrases on each page which makes kids want to read more. The Pigeon Wants a Puppy is one book in the series after the first book-- Don’t Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus. The pigeon really wants a puppy and lists off all the things puppies need and what the pigeon wants to do with it, which is comical because he cant do any of those things with a puppy. Once he gets a puppy, he realizes he doesn’t really want one, but instead wants a walrus. The illustrations are very similar to the illustrations in a comic book. They are simple lines and simple shapes, but different from other books which draws in the readers’ attention. A discussion the class could have about this book could be how one needs to be responsible to take care of a pet. The class could discuss what makes a good pet owner. A teacher could use this in the classroom for read alouds because it is mean to get kids involved by asking them questions all while reading in a funny/loud/dynamic voice. ( )

The Pigeon is back and up to his usual shenanigans! This time the pigeon desperately wants a pet puppy and is willing to beg, wheedle, manipulate, and melt down with the best of them to get his way. But when he sees a dog up close, he's terrified by its sheer size!

Once again, Mo Willems has written a hit. This is an exciting and fun book to read, and kids are highly entertained and amused by it. This is one I often bring with me anytime I know toddlers, preschoolers, or elementary school aged children will be in presence, and they all always love it and ask to hear it again! The older ones also enjoy taking a turn at reading it aloud themselves. ( )
