This retelling of the story of Persephone is appropriate for middle/upper elementary students. The prose is fairly straightforward, and the extensive illustrations will make it approachable for young readers. I'm not sure the illustrations would attract younger elementary or preschool students given the dense/detailed nature of the drawings compared to the more cartoon and happy styling of more modern picture books. The illustrations are very stylized, with lots of black lines and other use of black, juxtaposed against pastels. I wonder if this is a purposeful attempt to contrast the dark underworld of Pluto and the pastoral earth of Demeter. Abstract depictions of gods such as Apollo with detailed pictures of the upper and lower worlds add to the story.
