Published by a group devoted to wooden ship building, this story details the building of a whaling ship in 1868. As such, it may be a useful supplement to Moby Dick for older students, as well as a stand alone book for younger students. It is written in present tense, making the story line somewhat awkward at points. In addition, there is a great deal of vocabulary that will be unfamiliar to most children, but the illustrations are fascinating and helpful for a persistent and interested learner. A minor point is that the ship owners are Quakers. "A bountiful God, as real and immediate to them as the oaken floor they walk on, has provided the stuff of which to make floors and whaleships, an ocean full of whales, and a market for their oil and bone. To these gentlemen, wealth is not a badge of distinction but a burden of responsibility and an opportunity to glorify His name. Increasing that wealth is a duty and a covenant" (7). sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
