300 or so pages tell the story of about 10 days leading up to, including and the aftermath of a gunfight at the Lazy M. This is led by the evil Earl Shaw, the lifetime nemesis of Oliver Major. See, Shaw wants the Lazy M land for the water that runs through the land. Major isn't going to give it up without a fight. Hughes, the unlucky cow poke into whose campsite the shot man stumbled, is thought to have critical information as to who shot him. And the is important because the man who was shot and killed was the county sheriff! Oh, and there is a fair-haired lovely daughter of Major who is also tough and spirited (very turn of the century stereotyped - just watch any 1930's western movie to see her)... anyway, of course the strapping Clay Hughes and Sally Major fall in love. Although, thankfully, that is not titular to the story.
If you are looking for a light, fun and quick read, I do recommend this book. It isn't all that bad. I had fun with it. There are parts that a extremely well done (especially Chapters 31 and 32, when Hughs is running through a gauntlet of bad guys shooting at him, trying to get to the calvary! Seriously well written).
