Johnny Appleseed was a legend even in his own time-stories abounded about the kindhearted woodsman who planted thousands of apple seeds from Pennsylvania to Indiana. The real Johnny Appleseed was born John Chapman in a small village in Massachusetts. When he was a young man, he set off for the western frontier and along the way collected bags of apple seeds from cider mills. As John Chapman's apple orchards grew in number, so did the tales of Johnny Appleseed. In this wise and witty story, Will Moses relates the life of a great American folk hero who helped open and tame the wild frontier.… (más)

This story brings to life the legend Johnny Appleseed. It tells the story of how he traveled across our country spreading apple trees wherever he went. Johnny Appleseed grew up in a family of twelve children and was the youngest who became a frontier.

This is a good example of non-fiction biography as it depicts the true events of Johnny Appleseed's life and cites them in a bibliography at the end and does not create make-believe events. ( )

Johnny Appleseed was the story of a boy who grew up on a farm and loved the woods filled with apples. He grew up to travel and spread apple seeds around the country side. This is a good legend because it is about a real person but also isn't confirmed that it is a true story. I would use this for intermediate. Illustrations: watercolor ( )

Summary: This story of Johnny Appleseed goes into deep detail of his life and the real man that he was. It begins by telling us when and where he was born and who his parents were. It gives us the background of his life and how his grandparents were the ones that raised him and his sister. The book details his travels falling in accoradance with the seasons, johnny lived like the indians, sleeping under the stars and living off of the land. This book even details his faith and that he felt called to plant trees across the land. Johnny was a friend to all the settlers, he even took it upon himself to spread the news when unfriendly indians were coming towards settlements. The book continues to detail his life, describing all of the times he moved and who he met along the way, the book finally ends describing that he died in a way that he would have wanted, taking care of his apple trees.

Uses: This book is very informational when I didn't expect it to be. The main purpose for reading this book would be if you were studying johnny appleseed or had a rude to who wanted to learn about the movement of early settlers. This book contained more information about Johnny Appleseed than I had every know was out there. It goes into great detail and balanced images and the copious amounts of text very well.
