According to Spanish tradition, the bullfighter should never wear his costume outside the bullring. Published for the first time, the greatest stars of the Corrida, resplendent in their elaborately embroidered costumes, are brought to readers in a series of stunning studio portraits. Matadors dressed in gold and banderilleros wearing silver re-enact the dramatic gestures and intricate choreography of their profession, displaying the most artistic, appealing aspects of the bullfight as seen today in Spain, France and South America. With its informative text and luxurious full-page color photographs by international photographer Peter Muller, Oro Plata is the perfect showcase for both the colorful history and tradition of these costumes, and for the living legends of the men who wear them. This book comes in two editions, Oro Plata which is huge, 14.5" wide with fold-out photographs, and the rather small Costumes of light. I was waiting for Oro Plata to come down in price from $75 and eventually found one but it took so long to ship (about six weeks) that I forgot I'd ordered it and also got in the little one, Costumes of Light. Its easy to forget exactly what I've ordered since I order a lot of books for the bookshop. I can't afford these huge art books I so love so I always pretend to myself that I will sell them in the shop, I don't very often, I usually take them home, but its such joy owning books like these.

Fantastic book, the costumes are fantastic, the embroidery both sophisticated and naive - the evening capes often have pictures of Mary, and matadors and picadors are handsome and dangerous. The postures of bull-fighting are ballet and that aspect has been captured brilliantly in this peerless book. And I sold it to a photographer as enamoured with the pictures as I was. ( )
