"Marc Chagall loved to listen to the scriptures being read out loud. When he was four years old he started to learn Hebrew at his religion classes and on the Sabbath he would go to the synagogue. Many years later the painter saw for himself the places described in the scriptures when he travelled to the Palestine - the Holy Land - with his wife, Bella, and their daughter Ida. For Chagall, God was to be found in all people and things and so he mixed the stories in the scriptures with the everyday world which we can see around us - just like he mixed the colours on his palette. What Colour is Paradise is an imaginatively written book for children, which takes a close look at a number of Chagall's fascinating paintings including The Creation of Mankind, Paradise and Noah's Arch."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This picture book biography traces the life of artist Marc Chagall through his biographical paintings. Starting in Russia, we transcend through time and place with text that provides a starting point for reading into the paintings. The viewer is presented with beautiful reproductions of Chagall's work, and will find it difficult to turn the page! The text politely takes a back seat to the reproductions, allowing for an enjoyable introduction to the artist. Photos of the artist and his family are interspersed with text that is presented in a variety of colors. The end pages include a more thorough chronological biography of the artist's life and a listing of the paintings found in the book that include title, creation date and current location of the piece. A must for art libraries and K-12 school libraries. ( )
