These proverbs and teachings are the product of William Penn's life, faith, and Quaker roots. He offers these moral principles as guideposts for the life of his children. They resonate today. Covering 165 subjects with almost 300 specific sayings and teachings about friendship, discipline, conversation, religion and more, the book is a deliberate guide to our daily lives and interaction with others.

Dating from 1693, Penn's book is a mine of pithy comments about human life. This edition was published in 1974 with an Intro by James Newby

Penn was imprisoned for his faith many times. After being falsely accused of treason, Penn was forced into hiding for three years of imposed solitude. In this book, the product of that solitude, Penn distills the essence of his spiritual idealism, combining it with practicality and common sense. Penn's voice, as translated into today's English by Eric K. Taylor, can once again be heard in its simplicity and timelessness.

The passage on friendship is quoted as one of the epigraphs in J. K. Rowling's [Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows].

Death is but Crossing the World, as Friends do the Seas; They live in one another still. For they must needs be present, that love and live in that which is Omnipresent. In this Divine Glass, they see Face to Face; and their Converse is Free, as well as Pure. This is the Comfort of Friends, that though they may be said to Die, yet their Friendship and Society are, in the best Sense, ever present, because Immortal.

This edition is carelessly edited -- section headings are treated as run-ons from the previous section. EXAMPLE OF CHEESY SECTION HEADING ( )
