I gave this book a 5/5 stars because I thought the illustrations were wonderful and I thought the story painted a picture of many different landscapes of america. The book showcases what rural and urban america was like before cars and it showcases the slower lifestyle that those before us lives. Each page shows vivid detail of the buildings and of the people doing activities that would've been commonplace during that time period. I think that this book would be great for young readers to look at the images and recognize the different buildings and pictures but I think it would be good for older children who are learning about American history to visualize what life was like and depictions of colonial america and how they differ from the landscape we see around us today. I love how this book showed so many different areas in America. I believe a lot of foreigners get this idea that we are nothing but big cities. ( )

This is a very interesting book that would be very useful in a K-2 classroom. The setting of the book is that of early American. This could be useful in a History lesson about the landscape of America in colonial times. The book takes you through the American landscape beginning with Anno arriving in a canoe in the Hawaiian Islands then the seaport of San Fransisco, Indian tee pees and to a funeral of a soldier in the mid west. Next, a cattle drive as well as visiting a railroad town. Down south we go to an old fasioned town festival. Soon we move up to a parade in the big city, a wedding in the park, off to a picnic at the Capital. Anno finally makes it all the way to an east coast seaport and gets back into his canoe and paddles away.

This is a very old book that takes you through time during the late 1800s early 1900s.It follows a boys journey through different towns in ameica during celebrations, war, and funerals. The boys comes over on a ship and explores the land on a horse. He might be a spy for a foreign country to see what Americans are doing to establish thier country. This can be used for grade levels from 3-6. The hand drawn pictures can be used to create critical thinking questions as well as creating own dilalog to go with the boy adventure.
