First off, the setting of the majority of this book, the catacombs under Paris, was intriguing and really gave the book a creepy vibe. Between being lost in the tunnels full of human bones, then discovering something even more sinister along the way, it made for a good thriller. There's fear, action, despair, and a lot of introspection for the characters as they navigate their situation. Being a young adult book, there was some teenage drama, but it also led to some of the suspense as we waited for their secrets to be revealed amidst the secrets that the catacombs held. Though I did suspect some things before they were revealed, the book managed to also take some unexpected turns to keep me engaged. I thought that Ruby was a likeable main character who grew and learned a lot about herself over the course of the story. We don't get to see as much from Sean's perspective, but I liked how his point of view portrayed the search for the girls while giving his character room to grow as well. The book in general felt very readable, with great descriptions that painted a vivid picture.

What a uniquely grotesque and atmospheric YA thriller! It added another spot to my bucket list. (But I'll definitely do the legal tour!)

When Ruby sneaks out to attend an illegal party in the catacombs, she and her classmates are hoping for a thrill and to get some content for Ruby's social media channel. It doesn't hurt that their tour guide is a hot teenage boy, either. But a wrong turn and an accident soon turn their outing from thrilling to terrifying. When they begin to be chased by menacing figures in skeleton masks with knives, it's not long before Ruby begins to wonder if any of them will make it out alive.

I can't think of a better location to add the creepy factor in spades. Illegal hidden tunnels below Paris built out of bones? Coming across numerous skulls and trapped deep below ground? When one character says, "Sometimes you have to go down a level to go up," I got chills. This book's deep sense of place will make you feel like you're crawling through the catacombs alongside these characters.

There's a slight romantic subplot, as Ruby's crush works on the surface to find clues as to how she could have disappeared so thoroughly.

A nailbiter of a thriller with a satisfying conclusion, this is a must-read for YA fans!

Thank you to BookishFirst and the publisher for the advance review copy of this book. ( )

As soon as Diana, announced this newest book, I had to add it to my list to read. I found this book to share some of the same high intensity vibes as All Your Twisted Secrets. Mix this with being trapped in catacombs and you have me hooked already. As I was reading this book, I could not help but picture the movie, As Above, As Below about a group who does down into the catacombs and finds more than they bargained for. That is what happened to Ruby and her friends.

As the story progressed, I became more and more drawn into the story. It was like I was there with Ruby and her friends, running, screaming, fighting. I could not stop reading this book.

I could see this book being turned into a movie as it grabbed my attention with the storyline for sure. I would not want to be trapped in the catacombs with people after me.

Diana, this is your best book yet! Under the Surface is a nailbiter, edge of your seat read! ( )
