Interesting, but overlong, biography of Bess Myerson, centering on her reign as Miss America in 1945. The first 80 pages, about her life growing up in the Bronx, are only intermittently interesting, but the book takes off when she heads to Atlantic City for the Miss America pageant. Bess Myerson's much more interesting first person sections alternate with Susan Dworkin's third person biographical sections. Two large photo sections. The book glosses over or totally omits some of the less flattering events in Miss Myerson's life in later years, but offers a powerful look at antiSemitism and racism during the 1940s. First time in paperback, this unique biography and cultural history is based on History extensive research and interviews with more than one hundred witnesses from the period. Acclaimed novelist and playwright Susan Dworkin skillfully interweaves the absorbing first-person account of how Bess Myerson became the country's first, and still only, Jewish Miss America in the same year that World War II ended, with a fresh portrait of what life was like for women and Jews in America in the 1930s and '40s. Her tale of one girl's coming of age in prefeminist America is "poignant and appealing . . . as much a cameo of an era as a work of biography." --ALA Booklist No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
