A very good modern history book that looks at the state of Britain from a political point of view from the new Jerusalem of Atlees government all the ways to the chaos of Liz trusts mini budget and the subsequent rise of Rishi Sunak. This is a story, mainly of the Conservative party and the fears, tribulations, and difficulties faced over the same period of time by the Labour Party. The turning points were not that surprising to those people who are aware of the nuances and general direction of modern political history and there aren’t any particular surprises here. However, there is a lot that’s good and I do feel that it is a very good summation. This is history by broadbrush, but also with an intellectual bent and at times, an analytical precision which belies the main overlying thematic arc. Highly recommended. In Turning Points seasoned political commentator and broadcaster Steve Richards explores the most consequential events in modern British history. Every few weeks in British politics, a columnist will reach for the word "unprecedented" as a cabinet minister resigns or yet another inquiry is called. In this magisterial history, respected broadcaster and journalist Steve Richards puts the recent chaos into context and takes a step back to explore ten critical moments that have shaped modern Britain. From the Suez Crisis of 1956 to the COVID-19 pandemic, from 1945 to Thatcher, Richards argues that it is only with distance that we can perceive the tectonic plates shifting - and events that may seem earth-shattering in the moment might be a passing tremor with the perspective of history. With his trademark insight, forged over several decades as one of the UK's foremost political commentators, Richards blends anecdote and analysis to explore the biggest events in British political history. A must-read for anyone seeking to understand the United Kingdom, this landmark work is enlightening and entertaining in equal measure. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
