King - an 8 session study of Mark by Sarah K. Howley is an excellent guide for any Bible Study group that wants to focus more deeply on the book of Mark. Mark is the shortest of the four gospels and so it’s too easy to read it quickly and move on to the other more detailed gospels. Sarah Howley causes you to slow down, think about her questions, relate Mark to the Old Testament and then think about how it all applies to your life. Each session covers two chapters of Mark and would be a really helpful approach to reading Mark and gaining a clearer understanding of the questions she raises. ( )

I enjoyed the author's study guide on Matthew, which is done in the same format at this study on the Gospel of Mark. It's set up in the same way, with 8 sessions that can be done individually or with a group. Each session is a review of 2 chapters of Mark. The interesting thing about this study is that it is King/Kingdom focused. Most studies of the Gospel of Mark focus on Jesus being a servant. However, the author leads us in a study showing that Mark is a demonstration of the Kingdom of God on earth and "we can see what his kingdom looks like" by watching Jesus "live out what He created the kingdom to be like" and listening to how He "taught what He wanted from His citizens." It's an interesting approach to a familiar Gospel!

As with the Matthew study guide, it offers an "Old Testament Links" section, which I enjoy because it really emphasizes how Jesus was the fulfillment of the Old Testament scriptures. Finally, each section ends with an "Application" section - something far too many of us would rather jump too prematurely, but the study leads you through good study of the scripture prior.

This is a good study and I think after reviewing 2 of the authors books, I would add her to my Highly Recommended Authors List. ( )

"King: An 8-Session Study of Mark" by Sarah K. Howley is a spiritually enriching journey through the Gospel of Mark. Howley's insightful commentary and thoughtful questions make this study a profound exploration of faith and discipleship. Her deep reverence for the biblical text shines through, making it an excellent resource for theological students like yourself. Each session invites reflection on the teachings of Jesus and encourages a deeper connection with spirituality. A valuable addition to any theological library, "King" inspires a profound understanding of Mark's Gospel and its significance in Christian life. ( )
