The world is no longer safe for the Dragon Rider Murtagh and his dragon, Thorn. An evil king has been toppled, and they are left to face the consequences of the reluctant role they played in his reign of terror. Now they are hated and alone, exiled to the outskirts of society.

Throughout the land, hushed voices whisper of brittle ground and a faint scent of brimstone in the airand Murtagh senses that something wicked lurks in the shadows of Alagasia. So begins an epic journey into lands both familiar and untraveled, where Murtagh and Thorn must use every weapon in their arsenal, from brains to brawn, to find and outwit a mysterious witch. A witch who is much more than she seems.

In this gripping novel starring one of the most popular characters from Christopher Paolinis blockbuster Inheritance Cycle, a Dragon Rider must discover what he stands for in a world that has abandoned him. Murtagh is the perfect book to enter the World of Eragon for the first time . . . or to joyfully return.

A pleasant return to Alagaësia. Murtagh's story was one of finding himself and his place, and dealing with his a Thorn's dark past. The book also works as an introduction to a new threat that will play role in following installments (Murtagh is apparently not considered book 5).

Murtagh picks up where the Inheritance Cycle ends but follows Murtagh and Thorn on their adventures. I was excited to return to this world but found it difficult to delve back into the series. Having read the main series as they were released 20 years ago, I didn't get the tug back into the story. I would have liked to see more character development from Murtagh. It really felt like his entire character was that once he was made to do bad things. I love a redemption arc but I felt like this lacked depth. At almost 700 pages, I felt like it could have been condensed. The author's voice has certainly changed, and given he wrote Eragon as a teen I guess that is to be expected. Overall, a solid high fantasy novel that could be enjoyed independently of the original series. ( )

Murtagh is a whiny little bitch. The moping never ends. ( )

I'm pleasantly surprised and delighted that the storytelling of Christopher Paolini and the Inheritance Cycle has aged so well. Murtagh in particular is a solid entry, even if after the The Witch, The Fork, and The Worm, I'm incredibly eager to learn more about what Eragon gets up to in the far reaches of the world.

I'm not normally a fan of the storytelling trope of "actually, there's an even bigger villain than the one we just vanquished, who is somehow even more dangerous" but that being said, this is a very well told story, that I ended up really enjoying. ( )

This is an amazing book, so much so that now I have to read the other eragon books. I like the fact regardless if you have read the others you can still pick this one up and read it. ( )
