The first collected writings of Patricia Ann West take us on an ancestral journey to corners of the American South with softly whispered secrets, memories, history, and stories that have been carefully preserved--- told in family cemeteries, along creeks and rivers, down roads, across bridges, and on urban streets between Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA. You, the reader, will journey with the author's Gullah-Geechee ancestors, neighbors, and church family through slavery and reconstruction, segregation, the Great Migration, civil rights, desegregation, and contemporary challenges and victories. Still Water Words: Poems and Stories from Ancestral Places goes deep to touch you in a way that will leave you in tears, laughter, and longing for more! Finally, this collection stakes the claim that literary gold exists in Gullah Geechee, Southern, and African diasporic places! Patricia Ann West will take you there!… (más)

The detailed precision of scenes, places, and people in Patricia Ann West’s STILL WATER WORDS, POEMS AND STORIES FROM ANCESTRAL PLACES, make it one of the most import volumes by a native of Savannah, Georgia, published in the past 10 years. That observation becomes easily evident to a reader when contrasting the author’s portrayals of her Gullah Geechee heritage with the American southeast’s changing cultural landscape.

As I read and then re-read the book, I found myself thinking particularly about potential effects of Georgia’s powerful film industry and South Carolina’s increasing political significance on descendants of the ancestors West writes about with such care. Those thoughts turned into a review essay with a peek behind the scenes of the film industry in Savannah.
