Archaeologist Annja Creed narrowly escapes an attack by unknown fi gures when she tries to collect a package near her loft. She later learns that the sender--an old colleague named Fellini--has been brutally murdered.

Fellini had been researching the Hammer of Thor, the Norse god of thunder, and had linked it to a Viking warrior and a twelfth-century Latvian village. A coded message in Fellini's package leads Annja on a wild chase along the canals of Venice to Latvia for more clues to an ancient treasure. Rumored to be hidden deep in the forests of Latvia for nine hundred years, this fabled prize is also sought by a ruthless corps of mercenaries. And they will do anything to fi nd it. Including killing Annja Creed.

Title: God of Thunder Series: Rogue Angel Author: Alex Archer Rating: 2.5 of 5 Stars Genre: Urban Fantasy Pages: 352 Synopsis: Thor supposedly came to earth and left a great treasure as well as his hammer Mjolnir. One of Annja's former acquaintances wants to make his mark by finding the hammer. At the same time, a family of nobility that is skirting bankruptcy is seeking the treasure. Leroux and Garin get involved, one on each side. My Thoughts: Forget any thoughts of Mjolnir. This story doesn't actually have anything to do with that, even though it should. Lots of parenting issues between Annja, Leroux and Garin. Some shooting and chases, an obligatory badguy who is "really" bad because he does torture and stuff [oh lordy, like that makes someone worse than the guy who embezzles and ruins 1000's of families lives? phhhh] and of course everything is solved in the last 5% of the book. Too much about the treasure and not enough about the Hammer. That would have been cool but I guess the ghost author doesn't have an imagination? Wouldn't surprise me. I never liked Mel Odom, even if he wasn't the particular ghost writer for this book. " ( )

Creed is a part-time archeologist, part-time host of a tv show called "Chasing History's Monsters," and full-time adventurer.

When Annja Creed receives a mysterious package from an old friend, she is attacked before she can even get her hands on it. Mercenaries have been hired to take the package from her at all costs. When she finds out that her friend has been brutally murdered by the same attackers, she decides to look into his research on the legend of Thor, god of Thunder, and find out what everyone is searching for.

The suspense has stepped up in this installment when Annja's friend is tortured and murdered. Other friendships are tested. And, of course, there's the always present archeological mystery, this time focusing on Norse mythology. As before, the research and details that go into a story like this, constantly impresses me. It's not only informative, but presented in an interesting and exciting way. And then, there's the element of fantasy blended in, with the sword of Joan of Arc that Annja possesses and her occasional immortal companions, Garin and Roux.

The Rogue Angel series has been out for about a year now. And I'm never disappointed with the amount of action and suspense. And as not to deter new readers, they don't need to be read in order. Each story is inclusive to itself. Only the first in the series Destiny, needs to be read first in order to get the background story on Annja, the sword, and her immortal aquaintances. ( )
