The autobiography of Charlotte Church who is 14 years old and lives with her parents, Maria and James, in Cardiff. Her first stage appearance was at the age of three during a seaside holiday in Caernarvon, and by the time she was eight her voice had won her many local singing competitions. Signed up by Sony Classical, she released an album and was invited to perform for the Prince of Wales' 50th birthday celebrations at the Albert Hall, for Pope John Paul's Christmas concert at the Vatican and for President Clinton at the White House. Charlotte Church: Voice of an Angel. Library section 15: adult media. This wonderful debut CD was recorded when the Welsh soprano was 12. Her bell-like clear voice does justice to this selection of religious selections such as “Pie Jesu” by Andrew Lloyd-Webber, “Panis Angelicus,” “Ave Maria,” and “Amazing Grace,” as well as traditional songs from the British isles like the ethereal “Danny Boy” and “Three Welsh Bird Songs.” It is a fantastic debut album and uplifting, spiritual listening. It is so expressive of her national heritage too. I don’t know how a voice such as this can be improved upon, but she has become a mature singer of great vocal depth and musicianship. Her meticulous early training, as heard on this album, has allowed her to mature as a singer and performer, without falling prey to pitfalls that sometimes ensnare other young singers. ( )
