Blitzed #2
This one took me back to nursing duty on neurosurgical ICU decades ago. The deep coma, trying to talk to patients in comas, family members and friends worrying, and more. Some make it and some don’t but as this book is a comeback story with a, thankfully, happy ending…all works out well for the characters in this story…at least the main lead characters.
What I liked:
* Jason: college senior, football player, wealthy, privileged, has a bright future, in a lethal car accident that kills three of his friends, coma with concussion and fractures, doesn’t give up, hopes to play pro football, dealing with survivor’s guilt, connects with his soul mate while in the coma
* Ellie: college senior, foster system graduate, orphaned at twelve, genius with computers, drum scholarship, busks for additional income, has reactive attachment disorder (RAD), has been in juvie, sees a therapist, hopes to work for the FBI or in law enforcement, befriends Jason while he is in a coma, has trouble making connections with others
* Jason’s parents: good people there for their son
* The connection between Jason and Ellie and how it developed
* That Ellie had such an impact on Jason while he was in a coma and then later
* That Jason was able to connect with Ellie
* That it was a feel-good story
* Wondering if an athlete could really come back from head trauma that left him in a coma…I know people who are not allowed to play after too many concussions so a coma???
* That Ellie had faith in herself in spite of it all
* That Jason and Ellie had more in common than expected coming from such different backgrounds
* That there will be another book in the series
What I didn’t like:
* The senseless loss of brilliant talented athletes in an automobile accident
* That a person who had been in a coma would WANT to go back to football and risk his life with one bad hit.
