The principal war correspondant of the Boer War,aside of Wnston churchill, Henry wilson wrote this quite readable account of the South African war. The war introduced the term and practice of the "Concentration Camp", as a step in the ending of the guerilla period of the conflict. The Boers did begin the war, but the British were perfectly happy that they had, as the gold and diamonds of the continent were added to the Imperial GNP. While you do not end up liking either party to this struggle very much, it is an interesting desciption of the open field warfare which was ended by WWI. ( )
