The authors write this story of a woman names Lila who lives alone, high on a hill. She worked hard planting her fields. In the spring, she planted flowers. In the summer, she picked beans. In the fall, she made applesauce and in the cold winters, she mostly stayed by the fire. One cold winter night, she made a wish on a falling star and she found a bag of flour outside her door. She made the same wish on the second night and it came true again. On the third night, even though she could wish for money or fancy clothes, she doesn’t. She wishes for 2 cakes and a tractor with a chauffer. Lila is shown riding off into the sunset with her 2 cakes and a red tractor driven by a man.
I would suggest this book for children ages 6-7 because of the simple text. This would be a book to read again and again, which is what children of this age like. This would also be a good book to discuss feelings because children of this age are starting to develop empathy.
The illustrations are colorful yet very simple. And because there are 1-3 sentences on each page, there is a nice balance between the text and illustrations.
