The intimately appealing art of the Japanese sword, which flourished since the tenth century, is no doubt one of the most universally known af all Japanese art. An important part of that history rests on the fittings. Japanese sword fittings have always been held in high esteem by sword collectors. They have no equal.
With a growing awareness and appreciation of these fittings, a true need for a comprehensive text has arisen. This lavishly illustrated book, with 30 reproductions of fittings in full color, as well as 13 black and white, covers the history of over 60 schools and groups. Of particular value is a listing of nearly 2,000 artists, their signatures, styles, working periods, Kao and personal background.
This volume also deals with identification of signatures, family crests, and designs that are encountered on Japanese sword fittings,. The student and the advanced collector will find a wealth of knowledge to enhance his collecting efforts. The Samurai Sword, An American Perspective Vol.2 Fittings, will be an indispensable book and reference source for years to come.
The author, Gary D. Murtha, is a native of Missouri and graduate of the University of Missouri. He is currently a member of the Japanese Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords (N.B.T.H.K,) the Southern California Sword Club, the Token Study Group and a life member of the Japanese Sword Society of the United States. The author and his wife, Kiyome, and their three children reside in Kansas City, Missouri.
