( ) Courtney Crumrin: The Coven of Mystics, Special Edition Hardcover (Courtney Crumrin #2), by Ted Naifeh and Warren Wucinich (Illustrator), is a nice continuation of the children’s series. Young Courtney has magical powers but only uses them when she deems it absolutely necessary, like when she doesn’t want to do her school homework and puts a spell on a classmate to turn in assignments under Courtney’s name! If you liked the first book, Courtney Crumrin and The Night Things (and who didn’t?!) this is certainly the next book you should read. There are a lot of things going on in this story. Someone conjures up a Night Thing to do some killing. A woman has a curse put on her that makes frogs come out of her mouth. There’s a gathering of talking cats (Yay!). Courtney confronts a bully. And of course, the mysteries of some, but not all, of the killings are solved. A small problem I found with the story is that Courtney is described as “the sort of person that felt she needed to know everything” but then later it is said that she had walked by Radley Hall every day “yet it never occurred to her to wonder who used it and for what purpose.” That’s a minor quibble because the art of Wucinich is outstanding and practically eclipses the story itself. I love Courtney’s little monster friend, Butterworm. He’s almost cute! All of the characters, the backgrounds, the atmosphere itself, is perfectly created by the artist. The Coven of Mystics can be read as a stand-alone, but the ending is sure to hook you in for the NEXT volume: Courtney Crumrin in the Twilight Kingdom! I recommend this graphic novel to everyone who likes witch or monster stories. *I received a copy of this book from the publisher for review. I was not paid for the review.
