New Author Turned New Friend!

I have friends who take part in all walks of life. Personally, I think that makes them uniquely beautiful. The recommendation to read this book came from one of those beautiful people so thank you to him. This is my first read of anything by this author and I have to say I am forever sold. I have bought book two already and need to know what will happen between Jacob and Lyssa like yesterday. Warning if Paranormal Romance or BDSM is not your thing please stop here. But if this is totally your Jam enjoy the ride like I did. " decadent" is the main word I'd use to describe this book. It's meant to be read slowly and savored rather than gobbled up in a frenzy. I occasionally got a bit impatient with the pacing in the beginning, but once I accepted it, the book unfolded beautifully, with a rich, complex story to tell. Like a great red wine that blooms on your tongue. I loved the dynamic of Jacob Green and Lady Lyssa. Lady Lyssa is a powerful Vampire, Jacob Green is a human who belongs to her, body and soul. Their road is not smooth by any means, and many times I thought Jacob would walk away but I am so glad he did not. As the story unfolds Jacob is put in numerous uncomfortable situations and his mind is battling with his heart I love the devotion he shows by staying by his Mistresses side through it all not only being the best servant but being a devoted soulmate. I will be continuing the series not only because the characters are intriguing but because this author has built a world that I want to be a part of. ( )

Friend of mine commented when I had this book as 'want to read' that the best thing about it was the cover.

And I absolutely understand why she thinks so.

I enjoyed it myself, the push-pull between the main characters is enjoyable, it's a nicely different take on the over sexualized vampire trope/cliche, and Lyssa's battle with a degenerative illness was decently well presented which I always consider a plus.

But anyone looking for a femdom read is going to have some issues. Jacob just does not know how to submit and Lyssa, for all her hard talk/thoughts, mostly lets him get away with it, creating a very unsatisfying dynamic for someone looking to enjoy a true D/s romance.

Hill, unusually for her in my experience, drops several threads. For instance, Ingram's arc is hinted at in the beginning, and then peter's out as his emotional conflict about being involved with a vampire is never explored further and he's just 'there' when needed for the rest of the story. There's also a bit of 'magical negro' in the way he counsels Jacob.

So, yeah... The sex scenes are well written, the characters are interesting, the world is a nice change of pace from the usual vamp romance. But not one of Hill's best and the only kinky folks who will enjoy it are those who are okay with a person agreeing to be--hell asking to be!--a slave and then non-stop topping from the bottom. ( )

Wanting to serve a vampire Queen, who is an intense dominant. Watching an alpha maile who only wants to protect and serve her find a way to submit and yet not. Lots of hot steamy sex, laced with tons of D/s

It was slow to get going. Picked up in last third. Because of that I'm interested to read the next one. ( )
