When it comes to writing a novel that evokes emotions, it’s hard to beat Courtney Walsh. And in What Matters Most readers are given not one, but two lead characters who are trying to come to terms with their pasts. Emma’s best friend has challenged her to live her life after tragedy. In many ways, she’s going through the motions, but light is starting to come in through the cracks. And then she meets Jamie. This man makes her want to live. But Jamie is dealing with his own demons—including the reason he came to Nantucket and to Emma’s door. Yes, much of the tension in this book is because Emma and Jamie are holding back their biggest secrets, but the truth is, just like Emma and Jamie, we are held captive by guilt and shame at times and are in no hurry to expose those sides of us. Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own. It was a treat to return to Nantucket Island in Courtney Walsh’s new book, What Matters Most. The setting is gorgeous and enticing, the characters are realistic and engaging, and the writing evokes all the emotions. Emma Woodson is trying hard to get her life back and become independent several years after her husband is killed. Jameson Shaw is trying to absolve himself from guilt from his past involving Emma’s husband. Will their secrets destroy their growing relationship? Walsh is a master at bringing out all the emotions in her writing. I know I’ll be in for some heart-wrenching and some heart-stopping when I pick up her books. I would recommend this tale to those who enjoy clean contemporary romance. 4.5 stars I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy from Tyndale House Publishers through NetGalley. Emma Woodson is hoping the cobblestone streets of Nantucket and the charm of her late husband's family cottage will be the fresh start she and her young son, CJ, need. Securing a dream job at an art gallery is one more step along the path to a new life . . . and away from a piece of her history she hopes will never be revealed. Falling in love with the kind and handsome guy she hires to clean out the rental apartment above the garage wasn't part of the plan. Jameson Shaw came to Nantucket for one reason: deliver his letter to Emma and never return. But when he sees an opportunity to help her, he takes a chance, desperate to atone for his past. He never planned to keep his connection to her husband a secret or to fall in love with her. After all, he knows that their new relationship might not survive the discovery of who he really is. This is such a good story. The author has done a wonderful job of writing the story that deals with sensitive subjects of infidelity, death, grieving, and survivors guilt. The characters are very likable and strong. This story is so well written and realistic. I really enjoyed how both of the characters have similar talents and encourage each other. I also enjoyed how supportive Emma's in-laws were and how encouraging they were for her to move forward. This is definitely a book that many will enjoy.
