"You're a high school substitute? Are you crazy? We were so mean to them!" This is a common reaction when I tell people what I do, but I love substitute teaching at the high school level.I started substitute teaching in 1989, fresh out of college. I was looking for a way to support myself while I was in graduate school. A friend told me, "You have a bachelor's degree, so you can be a substitute teacher." In writing this book, I hope to be as good a friend for you as he was for me. This book explains not only how to get a high school substitute teaching job, but also how to do the job so well that it will be rewarding in and of itself. If you know any college graduates who are unemployed, tell them about this book. It might help them support themselves in the meantime, while they seek employment in their fields. Being an excellent substitute can also open the door to a regular full-time teaching position.Up until the advent of the Internet, most books for substitute teachers consisted largely of worksheets the substitute could photocopy and hand out to students, in the event the regular teacher hadn't left enough work to fill the whole class period. Today, you can instantly find and project one of a million free Internet worksheets. Heck, 99% of today's high school students have phones capable of finding these worksheets. You won't find worksheets in this book. High school students are too smart to do a substitute's ungraded busy work anyway. Today's high school students crave human interaction. I've seen them get more excited about a classroom discussion than about watching a movie. Times have changed, and I have remained a successful high school substitute teacher by embracing the changing times. Give my book a read and let me show you how to be a good high school substitute teacher who enjoys the job.… (más)

I received this book through the Early Reviewers, Member Giveaways. At first I was very interested in the topic, and as much fun as the topic was to read, the book itself was a bit long. Not that there wasn't good material for the amount of pages that make up the book, but some topic that were expended could have been shaved down, and other to be expanded. Also, for a publication in 2012, the author did not address recent improvements to the sub system, at least the 'updated' techniques my state uses. Overall the book is helpful as a 'cafeteria' book; picking and choosing what is useful to you as the reader. ( )

I am a former substitute now teaching High School. I LOVED this book - in fact, I had trouble putting it down. While I found her repetition annoying at times, her information was great! Since (I presume) she has never worked in a school system without the automated calling (like mine), there could have been more information on how to get called in those systems, but overall, there was SO much helpful information that I will be using it as I rewrite my substitute notebook. The only thing I had against the book was during the chapter on proper dress attire she spoke constantly about how female substitutes dressed too "sexy" or "slutty". This sort of blunt honesty would have been fine if her approach to the topic of dress code treated the male fashion do-nots as harshly. In fact, the whole chapter seemed to be rather judgey and focused on women only. That complaint aside though, this was a great handbook. I've substituted myself for a year of undergraduate work, and though there were a few technical differences on the subsitute system since we were in different states, the rest of her work is spot on. She seems to have a considerable amount of experience in the field, and this would be excellent mandatory reading for anyone considering this as a career move, or at least excerpts should be copied to make better substitute teaching manuals as a whole. Rather enjoyable reading. ( )
