I’ve read hundreds upon hundreds of thrillers, 56 so far in 2021 alone and I can count on one hand the amount that have actually frightened me. This one is officially on that list! I read this during a 7 hour road trip and it had me so spooked that when we stopped at a rest stop (late at night) I begged my boyfriend to pee outside the car instead of leaving me alone with the dog to go inside! This book was soo well written and captivating. Loved every second of it and looking forward to reading more from the author! Would give more than 5 stars if I could. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this pre-release in exchange for my honest review! Grace and Ryan are newlyweds who are going on a belated honeymoon. Ryan has found the perfect spot for them to be alone. A secluded cabin deep in the woods of Tennessee with nothing around for miles. Sounds perfect, if you aren't in a Kiersten Modglin book. The reader knows this trip isn't going to end well. As usual, Ms Modglin grabbed me from the first sentence. "Death has a smell". Add to that the fact that I am reading this at night, in my house with woods on one side on the Fourth of July with fireworks sounding like a war zone. Creepy! I hadn't read the book's blurb. I like to go in blank and discover it all myself. Grace and Ryan narrate alternate chapters. They are both flawed and unreliable narrators. Ryan married fairly late in life after dating for only 6 months. You sense he is deeply in love with Grace but maybe he wants different things. According to Grace, he has a secret that she knows. Grace had a hard life in foster care and seems a little withdrawn and nervous like she is keeping things to herself. So off they go to the mountains of Tennessee, way back in the woods, far from civilization, with no cell service.......Things begin to go wrong almost immediately, adding to this reader's sense of unease. I won't spoil the book but telling you these things so you can experience them yourself. Let's just say it would make a really creepy horror movie. In usual Modglin style the twists and turns keep coming. I was surprised and yet I wasn't. You just knew something like this was coming. It was just a matter of what and when. The ending was a surprise though. As a fan of Kiersten Modglin I was grateful to receive an early copy of this book through Netgalley and wish to thank them and the author. Ms Modglin has another hit on her hands. I love her books and can't wait to read more. "There was nothing left to figure out. We were going to die." I cannot remember the last time I was on the edge of my seat like I was with this book! I made the mistake of reading this while my husband was out of town and I was alone in the house. I had all the lights on, and still every little creak freaked me out! So, we have Grace and Ryan, newly married, and planning a delayed honeymoon. Instead of heading far away or to some tropical paradise, Ryan books a cabin in the mountains of Tennessee. Nothing ever good happens in an isolated cabin, especially with this author!! Soon, the week-long love nest they were hoping for turns in to a nightmare and they find themselves trapped with no way out, no way to call for help, and a strange man in the woods, who by all indication, is coming for them - and not in a friendly or helpful way. I am not going to spoil anything for you here, I try never to do that, but let's just say, in true Modglin style, there is layer after layer of twists in this story. Betrayal, secrets, ulterior motives, you name it, it's in here. You know, I've been in a cabin in the mountains before, and I always loved the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sprawling vista, and I've loved it. Until now. Daytime - fine. Night time - not so much. I've read all of this author's books and have been shocked by the ending each and every time. She has such a talent for creating new and original storylines, and twists and turns you won't see coming. While all of her books are just amazing, this one has to be one of my favorites!! sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
"When my husband found this perfect little cabin in the woods for our honeymoon, I couldn't wait to get away. Just us in the middle of the forest, waking up every day in the trees, ending each night in the hot tub under the stars. But now I'm not sure that I know my husband at all..."--Provided by publisher.
