You’ve Got Plaid by Eliza Knight
Prince Charlie’s Angels #3

Fiona, The Phantom, messenger for the king, and star of this story finds her happily ever after and finishes this three-book series.

What I liked:
* Fiona: strong, intelligent, cunning, capable, lethal, dedicated, loves her family, committed to the cause she believes in.
* Brogan: illegitimate, strong, deadly, leader, smart, clever, planner, king’s man, wise, ferocious, a good man.
* The 7 men that traveled with Brogan after the battle at Culloden – would like to know more about them.
* The slow growing romance between Fiona and Brogan
* The esteem Fiona was held in
* Milla: a nice canine addition to the story
* That the good guys in this story all seemed to survive
* Wondering about Gus and Leanna in the USA and whether or not they will get a book or two in the future along with Ian.
* Being able to visit the past and seeing history without having to actually experience the hardships the characters had to deal with.

What I didn’t like:
* Knowing that the evils of war still exist and are as bad now as they were back then.

Did I like this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Yes

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Casablanca for the ARC – This is my honest review.

In this third and final book of the Prince Charlie’s Angels series, we follow the story of Fiona MacBean and Brogan Grant. It is a tense, exciting, gripping tale of the lives of the Scots during the battle at Culloden and just following it. Prince Charles is in the country and actually participated in the battle of Culloden – but none of those promised French troops and weapons were there. After soundly defeating the Scots at Culloden, the Duke of Cumberland, known as The Butcher, has his redcoat army all over Scotland with orders to kill any and every Scot who even remotely appears to be a Jacobite. To the Duke and his Redcoats – they ALL appear to be Jacobites so they are pillaging, raping, torturing, and finally killing any Scot they can find. It is the tensest of times, one Scot doesn’t know if the other is trustworthy or not. Some Scots are siding with the English King George and others are on the side of Prince Charles, but no Scot is truly safe.

Fiona MacBean is Prince Charles’s official messenger and she’s also known as the Phantom because of her ability to appear out of nowhere. She’s spent her entire life eluding the nasty English redcoats. She can move without sound, totally disguise herself so nobody would recognize her – not even her family, and she is totally fearless. She can protect herself if she has to, but she avoids having to do so unless it is dire circumstances indeed. Fiona and her two friends, Lady Jenny MacIntosh (The Rebel Wears Plaid) and Annie Macpherson (Truly Madly Plaid) vowed to do whatever it took to see that Prince Charles assumed the Scottish throne. They’ve done an admirable job so far, but the task has become more difficult – and now, since Culloden, it has become almost impossible. With Prince Charles on the run and the people of Scotland losing hope, they are going to have to work even harder to rally the Scots again.

Brogan Grant is a totally loyal, ferociously gifted warrior in support of Prince Charles. Brogan is the illegitimate son of the Laird of Clan Grant, but he has no loyalties to his father because the Laird has come out in support of the English and has created a schism among the members of Clan Grant. Brogan doesn’t see himself as a strong and capable leader, but whenever someone is needed to step up and lead, it seems everyone always turns to Brogan. Sadly, Brogan is totally closed off emotionally – especially with women. Anyone who should ever have protected him, loved him, or cared for him, has left him. Love, a wife, a family, well, they just aren’t in his future.

Brogan and Fiona first meet just hours prior to the battle at Culloden when Fiona delivers a message from Prince Charlie. Brogan takes some convincing that the message is from Charles and the exchange is tense. Then, they meet again just after the battle when Brogan is trying to get to Prince Charles to assure he is protected. He finds the headquarters abandoned and Fiona being attacked. Fiona and Brogan continue their battle of wits from that point forward. Brogan insists upon being chivalrous and protecting Fiona – and Fiona wants no part of it. She’s much safer and quicker on her own. Each was as strong-willed and forceful as the other and it was fun to watch the two fight a battle with each other as well as the redcoats. I’m sure it highly entertained the six other warriors who were traveling with them.

I can definitely recommend this series and this book. It is well researched, well written, and delightfully entertaining. To me, though, I was just a tad disappointed in Fiona and her total unbending personality. It was ALL about her – her mission, her way, nothing else was acceptable. The scene at the end (I’ll not tell you what) was just the final straw for me – I just couldn’t convince myself to totally like her. She came back and rescued a bit of that, but not totally. I figure if she did it once, she’ll do it again. Anyway, other than my personal disappointment in Fiona, I loved the book – and that disappointment is why the book is 4-stars rather than 5.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. ( )
