This charming collection of essays on folk remedies comes to us from the mind of the great food writer M.F.K. Fisher. It was one of Fisher's own favorite works. ( ) A little gem of folk medicine lore by one of my favorite authors, who considered this one of her best books. As she says, "much of what we know of medicine comes from very ancient times, and from the birds and animals that we have watched." It's fascinating to read about the origins of some of the "receipts" for tonics and palliatives. Honey, herbs, vinegar, whisky or brandy, and faith in their properties, have eased a lot of complaints over time. Fisher observes that the simple act of swallowing something deliberately and on a schedule may have a calming effect that soothes the misery while time brings on the cure that was coming anyway. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
2013 Reprint of 1961 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. For many years Fisher collected lore about odd restoratives and remedies-medicines, nostrum, herbs, oils, powders, charms, poultices, liquors, brews and cure-alls for coughs, colds, sore throats, poisons, freckles and warts, nosebleeds, bites of insects and mad dogs, burns, rashes, rheumatism, excess weight, chills, fevers and wounds incurred in the mating season. Herein she recounts the origins, applications and apparent effectiveness of these unusual recipes in a group of essays in which wonder and wisdom, nostalgia and quiet humor are the main ingredients.
