How can you make a choice like that? Decide that you are the solitary individual among hundreds of thousands who deserves to live? Or not even deserves: simply gets to. Wasn’t it such choices that got us into this mess in the first place?

This is dark and grim on every possible level. But very, very thought-provoking.

Brian Evenson is here at his very best. Solution is a story about choices and family and letting go and moving forward. The front three quarters of the story is all at once darkly funny, heartbreaking, and an affecting call to look around at the world as it is not, uncertain unstable. Everything fits together though - most of all its a story - a story with a clear agenda, yes, but the story and the character - the father-scientist stand out most of all and by the end the uncertainty of all things is really what Solution is all about. At least to this reader that was the case. ( )
