How do Muslims relate to Islam in societies that experienced seventy years of Soviet rule? How did the utopian Bolshevik project of remaking the world by extirpating religion from it affect Central Asia? Adeeb Khalid combines insights from the study of both Islam and Soviet history to answer these questions. An examination of the ways in which Soviet rule in Central Asia transformed the Muslim societies/cultures of the region. Khalid contends that in the aftermath Islam became synonymous with tradition and subordinated to new national identities. He examines the ways in which post-Soviet states have sought to control and define religion. An interesting and important contribution to knowledge about a region that is too important to remain obscure.
