"After spending most of his twenties pursuing a career as a literary agent, John Hodgman decided to try his own hand at writing. Following an appearance to promote one of his books on The Daily Show, he was invited to return as a contributor. This led to an unexpected and, frankly, implausible career in front of the camera that has lasted to this very day, or at least until 2016. In these pages, Hodgman explores the strangeness of his career, speaking plainly of fame, especially at the weird, marginal level he enjoyed it. Through these stories you will learn many things that only John Hodgman knows, such as how to prepare for a nude scene with an oboe, or what it feels like to go to a Hollywood party and realize that you are not nearly as famous as the Property Brothers, or, for that matter, those two famous corgis from Instagram. And there are stories about how, when your television gig is canceled, you can console yourself with the fact that all of that travel that made your young son so sad at least left you with a prize: platinum medallion status with your airline. Both unflinchingly funny and deeply heartfelt, Medallion Status is a thoughtful examination of status, fame, and identity--and about the way we all deal with those moments when we realize we aren't platinum status anymore and will have to get comfortable in that middle seat again"--… (más)

Immenently enjoyable stories from John Hodgman's life, read (in the case of the audiobook) by Hodgman himself. What more could you possibly need to know? ( )

I'm a huge fan of Hodman's podcast. This book is funny and poignant - some parts hit me hard in the feels, and some parts had me disturbing the family as I laughed (hard) out loud, and I flew through it in a flash. Obviously, if you do audiobooks, that's the right format for this one! ( )

This was fun to do on audiobook since John Hodgman reads it. I thought it was a little funnier than Vacationland, and I had many a laugh on my work commute. He knows how to laugh at himself, while getting his readers to take a look at their own folly and laugh too, and feel like they have embarrassing things in common with a famous person. Or a “once-famous” person, as he refers to himself.
Hodgman’s introspective humor makes me laugh and sometimes cringe a little. When he gets weird about mentioning names and starts dancing around revealing something I can find out myself with a little Googling, I get a little vexed. In this book, I think he might be doing it as a joke on himself for doing it in Vacationland, especially since he spills at the end which dang airline he’s been talking about in code the whole time.
He’s weird, but he’s mostly my kind of weird, and this is an entertaining read no matter how much you know about him to begin with.

Medallion Status is a bit more melancholy than Vacationland, which your mileage with that may vary[1], but unfortunately nearly all of the melancholy is filtered through sadness about Hodgeman's decreasing fame and career TV prospects.

I get how important that is to him; important enough, after all, to write a book about it. And when the Medallion Status is far away from showbiz, discussing frequent flyer programs or his hometown in Maine, it is quite good, and appropriately interesting and sad. But it is impossible for me to care less about anything Hollywood, which radically reduced how much I was ever going to get out of this.

Still, he's a good enough and funny enough writer that it is tough to complain too much, and the episodic nature of the stories works quite well in these COVID times, despite having been largely written before them.

[1] As I've gotten older, I have begun to dig melancholic memoirs; melancholy has become a bit of a default feeling for me, so anything that lets me know it is a semi-universal experience for men of my demographic, is, for whatever reason, pleasurable. ( )

A charming and well observed mediation on fame and identity. ( )
