At one point, about five years ago, I did have the opportunity to browse through this volume in a book store, and my snap impression was that it wasn't worth my purchase, but it might be worth getting out of a library. Having finally had the chance to sit down at length with the work, this is less systematic of an exercise than one might want. On one hand, Wolf wanted to offer a tribute to the "Golden Age" of pre-WWII aviation (his father having spent some time basically being a barnstormer). On the other, Wolf is obviously more comfortable writing about the multi-engine bombers that are his bread and butter. These two subjects don't mesh all that well, at least in the way Wolf has structured this work (mostly on a country by country basis). That said, I would have been delighted to have encountered a book like this in my mid-teens, so it's probably a perfectly acceptable book for the general reader. ( ) sin reseñas | añadir una reseña
This meticulously researched volume is a must in the library of any aviation buff: the most comprehensive descriptive and illustrated history of military and civilian aircraft and their pilots (men and women) to increase the range and endurance of their aircraft. Beginning with the proof of concept efforts to establish the airplane as a true flying machine from 1900 to WWI, it then delves into civilian and military efforts by country, with the civilian effort mainly for personal achievement and the military for ultimately developing the intercontinental bomber and beyond. Hundreds of daring civilian flights of the 1920s and '30s are described by nation until the start of WWII. The inflight refueling mania of the 1930s and pre- and post-WWII military refueling efforts are covered. Post-WWII civilian aircraft and military fighter distance record attempts are included, as are the efforts of the Cold War and beyond. Also described are airline, seaplane, balloon, glider, hang glider, solar, and human-powered aircraft accounts. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
