Fantasy. Fiction. HTML:Half orc. All badass. A female chieftain in a brutal wasteland society fights to take what is hers in an action-packed, foul-mouthed fantasy adventure from the author of The Grey Bastards (“Nonstop action, though not for faint hearts.”—The Wall Street Journal).

Fetching was once the only female rider in the Lot Lands. Now she is the proud leader of her own hoof, a band of loyal half-orcs sworn to her command.

But in the year since she became chief, the Lots have tested her strength to the breaking point. The Bastards are scattered, desperate, their ranks weakened by a mysterious famine, their fortress reduced to smoldering slag. And their troubles are only growing. A pack of ravening beasts circles their camp, while grasping human nobles hatch a plan that will shift the balance of power in the Lots.

Fetch and her comrades are still standing defiant—they’re Bastards, after all—but even the toughest half-orc can take only so much; and Fetch knows they’re on the verge of ruin.

As she strives to lead her hoof to safety and unravel the plots set against them, Fetching must journey through forbidden elven lands, overcome long-standing hatreds, battle a monstrous wizard of terrifying power—and, worst of all, delve into the dark truths of her own existence.

She’s no stranger to fighting the world, but on this journey, sharp steel and a strong hog won’t be enough. To survive these trials, she’ll have to defy not just her foes but the very nature of the Lots.

The True Bastards is the sweeping, ambitious second entry in the Lot Lands series, an irresistibly thrilling, gritty, foul-mouthed adventure that deepens, expands—and again upends—the Bastards’ unforgettable world.
Advance praise for The True Bastards
“[An] action-packed sequel . . . the story is filled with relentless action and powered by a cast of adeptly developed and emotionally appealing characters. . . . Fans will be overjoyed not only with the return of some beloved characters, but also with the novel's conclusion, which sets up the storyline for a much larger adventure to come. Imagine an outlaw biker gang of half-orcs riding giant war pigs and you've captured this saga's gloriously dirty soul.”Kirkus Reviews (starred review).

On the whole, this was a great read that ended in a satisfying place. In the specific, I found it _very_ hard to remember enough details from the previous volume to always be able to follow the action. Granted, I read a lot of books, but you definitely need to read the first one in order to follow plot points, especially later in the book. An immersive read, and the world building is harsh but excellent. There were a couple of points when I got frustrated with the plot twists (just_stay_dead_ already), but I did appreciate the even-handed cruelties and crudities really were doled out and dodged equally by both men and women. Literally the third series I've picked up and put back down again. I managed to get through the first book in this one a year or so ago, and thought it was okay. But this one? Yeah, read that opening scene and asked myself if I really wanted to devote the time to the rest of this book.

And the answer was a resounding no. So, I've changed my mind. I said in my review of The Grey Bastards that I'd read the second book. That's now a big ol' nope.

DNF.

2.5 stars. It's pretty fun, but I enjoyed the first one more. The world seemed a bit more arbitrary in this one, the magical system sprouting new features at will to push the plot along, without setting any clear boundaries for the future. Sometimes that works (The Library at Mount Char), and sometimes it makes all sense of danger evaporate (here). Also, I kind of lost interest in the characters. ( )

The True Bastards by Jonathan French is a book I requested from NetGalley and the review is voluntary. Last year I read The Grey Bastards and of the 800 books I read, this book stood out as my favorite! So when I saw this second book I really hoped they would let me read it!
The last book was centered around the half orcs group, they call a hoof, and this good calls themselves The Grey Bastards.
This group has some of the same people but they have the first woman half orc chief. The hoof lives in the same Lot as before but they call themselves The True Bastards. This job is not easy for a male to be riding a giant mean tusked hog. A hog big enough to carry a half orc long distances. The female chief has to ride, fight, pull and shoot a bow, knife fight, and be totally fearless to live in a hoof but more so to be the chief.
The Lots is a hard life. The food is scarce, lots of enemies, the land barren. All the good depends if the chief's decisions.
This is a very, action filled book that holds nothing back. If you are offended by swear words, even implied ones, this is not for you. This is what it would really be like if...
That's why I like it. French make this world and characters so real! I think my favorite character is Polecat, he is paler than the other half orcs and very quiet on his feet, and a good sniper! Bad guys are dead and they don't know it yet!
This is non-stop action, page turner from the beginning! My emotions were everywhere!
There are lots of great creatures in here too. Elves, trolls, orcs, snake like creatures, sorcerers, and centaurs. The worst are humans. There is so much that goes on in here! It is a must read! Truly another winning book! Love the cover! ( )

This follow up is just as good as the first (The Gray Bastards), maybe even better. I freaking ate this book up! The plot is just as tightly woven and the stakes are even higher in this installment. Plus the story is told through Fetch's eyes instead of Jackals and that adds a whole new dimension to this story (Fetch is my homegirl). Gritty, action packed, and filled to the brim with insane world building, this series is only getting better. I legit cannot wait for the next one (for real - there better be a ton more in this series!). The True Bastards takes places months after the last book and opens with the bastards trying to survive away from their stronghold with Fetch as hoof master. Since the Kiln burnt down, they are having to make do in the frail town, Winsome, and they are trying to reinforce it as quickly as possible to keep themselves safe. The only problem is; food is near impossible to come by, morale is low, and there is a terrifying pack of laughing dogs that wants nothing more to scale their walls and eat everyone. PLUS Fetch is still trying to rid herself of a sickness while still remaining strong for the hoof. The story quickly takes off and is one action packed adventure filled with fighting, fucking, and more fantastical enemies and allies. Soo freaking good! ( )
