"Homer McCarty adopts the voice of seven-year-old Buck to recollect his own life growing up in rugged southern Utah Territory in the late 1800s. Although Buck's reflections are necessarily imprecise, being gathered from fragments of memory and then embellished freely, the stories he tells are an honest look at life on the frontier"--Provided by publisher. McCarty endeavors to write with the mindset and the vocabulary of the child he was back then, and this might knock the book down a notch or two for those who don't appreciate this stylistic choice. For them, I strongly recommend the writings of Ed Geary, who wrote one of this book's blurbs. Both The Proper Edge of the Sky and Goodbye to Poplarhaven are masterpieces. ( )
