Ms Caldwell does an amazing job at making the characters realistic. The ten year old Frederick swings from playful boy, to resentful pre-teen, to man of the house. His mother Martha is struggling to keep her family safe but the locals don't take kindly to bigamist in their midst.
What starts out to be just a check in to make sure Martha and Frederick are doing okay, turns into much more when it becomes obvious that they are in danger. In addition to providing protection, Graham provides a male role model for Frederick and some loving companionship for Martha.
The danger is real and once they all come to London everything reaches the boiling point.
If you want a book where you can laugh and cry and love every minute of it - this is the book for you. Christi Caldwell is the master of characters and emotions and providing amazing Happily Ever Afters. ( )
