Written an illustrated by Deborah Marcero. This is a story of a girl who wants to be “an explorer, a pioneer, a trailblazer.” She needs to find something to take to show and tell at school. She wants to discover something to take that has never been found before. She then sets out on trips in her imagination to discover this new something. The little girl makes maps of her imaginary travels. Each map is packed full of clever names and places and each map includes a legend so it is actually a great book for learning about maps.

Roos wil onderzoeker, ontdekkingsreiziger en avonturier worden. Niet zo maar; wel om maandag iets te kunnen laten zien tijdens het kringgesprek op school. Wat er gebeurt als Roos op zoek gaat, wel daar gaat dit prachtige boek over.

De oorspronkelijke titel licht al een tipje van de sluier: My heart is a compass. Mooi hé? Naast een prentenboek, een voorleesboek en een zoekboek (de prenten zitten boordevol grappige details) is dit in feite ook een boek vol poëzie. “Met haar hart als kompas werd haar fantasie een plattegrond.” Hoe mooi is dat?
De poëtische schoonheid schuilt niet alleen in de woorden maar ook in de prenten. De blauwkleurige onderwaterprent wil ik aan mijn muur en misschien zelfs wel als tattoo. Zo mooi dus.

Roos is wijs, moedig en dapper. Dat ontdek jij gedurende het boek en dat ontdekt zij ook op het einde van het verhaal. En misschien ga jij als kleine (of niet meer zo kleine; zoals ik) avonturier door het lezen van dit boek beseffen dat ook jij moedig en dapper bent. (Als je dit boek in handen hebt ben je sowieso al wijs door je keuze voor dit wonderlijk mooie verhaal.)

Such a nice story. The author has encompassed map making with little girl looking for adventure and excitement. The journey will be far, and may take many maps, but she will search far and wide for something to amaze her classmates. And sometimes, that simple something is a story.

Determined to discover something new, unknown, or exotic for her class's Show-and-Tell, Rose sets out on a voyage of the imagination, her map-making skills standing her in good stead, as she plots a course through multiple fantastic landscapes. From her home to the beach, from the beach to the exosphere and back down to the ocean, across the ocean to Cat Island, and inland by train, all the way to the Last Stop, every leg of Rose's journey is laid out in a fantastical map. But when she returns home empty-handed, with no new discovery, she feels she has failed. Will she have nothing to share, at Show-and-Tell? Or will the journey itself prove worthy...?

Being completed unfamiliar with author/illustrator Deborah Marcero's name and work, I picked up My Heart Is a Compass with no expectations or preconceptions. How glad I am that we got it into work, as it is a true gem! The artwork itself is beautiful, with a lovely, subtle color palette and so many wonderful details, especially on the pages with Rose's maps. There's so much to look at, in these maps, so many delightful place names! The story is also delightful, emphasizing the idea that the journey is every bit as important as the destination, and that the act of creating, whether a story or a map, is also an act of discovery, resulting in just the sort new, unknown and exotic thing that Rose longs to find. This is just a charming book, and I suspect that, had I encountered it first as a child, I would have enjoyed poring over the pages. Recommended to anyone looking for new children's stories about creating stories and art. For my part, I will definitely be looking for more of Deborah Marcero's work! ( )
