"Naval aviator Jeremiah Denton was captured in North Vietnam in 1965. As a POW, Jerry Denton led a group of fellow American prisoners in withstanding gruesome conditions behind enemy lines. They developed a system of secret codes and covert communications to keep up their spirits. Later, he would endure long periods of solitary confinement. Always, Jerry told his fellow POWs that they would one day return home together. Although Jerry spent seven and a half years as a POW, he did finally return home in 1973 after the longest and harshest deployment in U.S. history. Denton's story -- including that of the men he led, and of his wife, who fought for prisoners' rights while he was held captive -- is an extraordinary narrative of human resilience and endurance. Townley grapples with themes of perseverance, leadership, and duty while also deftly portraying the deeply complicated realities of the Vietnam War in this gripping narrative project for YA readers."--Provided by publisher. This memoir recounts the time Jeremiah Denton spent as a Prisoner of War in the Vietnam War. Denton's aircraft was downed and he was made to live in several different war camps throughout the time he was imprisoned. While there, his rank allowed him to "command" the other prisoners in the camps. They devised a way to communicate with each other through a variation on Morse code. Denton encouraged his men to abstain from talking with their captors, resulting in the torture of the POW's. Denton takes comfort in and promotes a strong sense of patriotism to his comrades to help maintain this silence and protect the homeland. Give this title to young people interested in war history, POW's, or memoirs. ( )
