"Skippy" is one of my all-time favorite old comic strips, with Skippy Skinner as a misanthropic but charismatic, amoral but sweet, pugnacious but compassionate 8-year old. The artwork is distinctive and sublime, the humor a fine mix of high and low, and Skippy is about as compelling a character as I have seen in comics, reminding me of Calvin in "Calvin and Hobbes", but with a better grasp of what it takes to lead the neighborhood gang. Skippy is a braggart, at times a bully, contemptuous of booklearning, underhanded in his dealings with others, and at the same time as likeable and poignant a boy as I have seen depicted in any strip.
