Record company catalogs are filled with cast albums of musicals that flopped or were small failures and yet, on the basis of those albums, have enjoyed posthumous reputations as lost classics. Redhead is the opposite, a show that was a success when it opened in 1959, but has been largely forgotten since. It is the work of Dorothy Fields (and other lyricists) and Albert Hague, featuring Gwen Verdon and Richard Kiley, and is a star vehicle for Verdon. The cast album reveals that, despite the singers' determination, it simply does not have a memorable score, and the attempted British accents don't help, either. Redhead was reissued on CD on July 19, 1994, with new liner notes by Peter Filichia. [Three bonus tracks are added to this version of Redhead.]
