i read 2 books by rachel barnes--picasso and gaugain by himself--in florida and really enjoyed them. this is the only book the opl has by her. it reminded me of our trip to birmingham last year. ( )

Fratellanze inglesi e Unità d'Italia

Lo sapevate che tra coloro i quali, intorno alla metà dell’ottocento, presero parte attiva in Inghilterra nel faticoso processo di unificazione dell’Italia va annoverato, anche se non direttamente, un gruppo di artisti e letterati, diventato poi famoso, il cui nome di “confraternita” fu scelto per le connessioni esotiche con i briganti e rivoluzionari italiani? La firma con la quale essi erano soliti siglare, sia gli scritti che le opere pittoriche, ricorda molte abbreviazioni che ancora oggi hanno un fervore politico e rivoluzionario. Come, ad esempio, le famigerate moderne “B.R”, accompagnate dal triste simbolo della “stella rossa”. “PRB” era, invece, l’acronimo di questa organizzazione che non aveva alcunchè di criminale, ma stava ad identificare la segreta natura della loro “fratellanza”. La sigla veniva usata come provocazione e sfida all’dentificazione contro la decadenza artistica e culturale del tempo. Un periodo storico in cui l’arte, a loro parere, era decaduta e scaduta sin dai tempi del grande Raffello. Per questa ragione il gruppo di artisti ed intellettuali è diventato poi famoso con il nome di “Pre-Raphael-Brotherhood”. Tra i fondatori e animatori si annoverano ben quattro fratelli che portano nome e cognome italiano, i Rossetti: Maria Francesca Rossetti, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Michael Rossetti, Christina Rossetti...

The pre-Raphaelite brotherhood was founded in 1848 when a group of young artists joined together in an attempt to revitalise contemporary art. Their work provoked censure from critics and shocked reactions from the public, yet from the pre-Raphaelite circle emerged some of the greatest artists of the 19th century - Rossetti, Millais, Holman Hunt and the decorative artist William Morris.
