As a former assassin in the Hunter program, Asher is one of a small group of Gen One Breed vampires who survived the horrors of a madman's laboratory and the cruelty of the training that made him one of the most lethal beings in existence. Now, twenty years after his escape from those hellish origins, Asher is a loner whose heart is as cold as his skills are merciless. But when he thwarts a killing under way in the middle of the desert outside Las Vegas, Asher meets a beautiful woman who draws him into a deadly game against powerful enemies . . . Orphaned as a child after her mother's murder, Naomi Fallon didn't survive twenty-six years on the street without using up most of her nine lives. But when her latest caper lands her in the Mojave against a Vegas gangster's henchmen, she's certain her number is up. Then he appears-immense, brutal, and far from human. Naomi's never needed anyone's help, least of all one of the Breed. But after one risk too many, only a man with Asher's skills can keep her safe. Yet the solitary, seductively handsome vampire has enemies of his own, and a secret that will not only shatter her faith in him but her heart, proving what she's feared all along-that trust is only an illusion and love may be the sharpest weapon of all. Listened to audio narrated by Roger Wayne.

Asher has been living remotely in the desert until he comes across thugs trying to kill what he thought was a young teenage boy. It turned out to be Naomi, a badly beaten young woman who was a breedmate. Determined to protect her even from herself and turn her over to the Order he finds she's not going to meekly cooperate with his plans for her.

Naomi is resourceful and has been managing since her mother was killed at a young age. She's not going to be taken in by vampires, she has a home for homeless teenagers to support and vengeance against the man who killed her mother to finish. The problem is the bad guys are on to her and things are unraveling fast at the same time these two find an attraction for each other.

I enjoyed this spinoff and the introduction of the hunter characters to the Breed world. There were items glossed over but I'm not sure if that was to leave us curious for more or an oversite an the author's part. I also thought their connection and chemistry didn't seem as hot as some previous couples, but they did make a great team working together. So mixed feelings over all, enjoyable as a paranormal read not so much on the romance side.

This book was an amazing start to a spin off series! As a long term fan of Adrian's Midnight Breed series I have to be honest, when Iheared the words "spin off" the first thing that came to mind was it was going to be one character from the main series with their own series. A common concept that many authors have tried and I've come to dislike. But what I like about this one is that it is not. The concept was taken from the original series but is based off of many different characters and I think that is why I loved this first book so much. Because there is no moving storyline between the spin off series, it'll be based on many different Gen One Breed's from Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series and each book will have its own story. This definitely gives room for creativity and I can't wait until the next book launches!

I think that both the Breed and the Breedmate in this first book were a perfect match to start with as they both are very strong characters at the same time have underlying weaknesses that have to come out in order for them to be together. The action in the story was great as well, each new character she brought in had a very rounded out character and an important role in a plot. By the end of the story nothing was left out of place or kept you wondering.

Even if you are new to Adrian's works you will be able to start off right at the beginning and understand what happens without knowing much back history of the Breed. And for those of you who are fans of the series she does mention two members of the Order who we haven't heard from in a while!

Would definitely recommend, it's worth a read. 5 out of 5 stars for me!
