The idea of sisu in its most practically applied sense was introduced to the world when Finland faced a challenging moment. In the autumn of 1939, the country was invaded by its neighbour, the Soviet Union. The Soviets possessed more than three times as many soldiers as the Finns, thirty times as many aircraft and one hundred times as many tanks. Though the outcome of this sisu moment looked grim, it became our “finest hour”.
Part of my distant genealogical relatives have Scandinavian ancestry, so I enjoy learning about the different countries and cultures. Based on the cover, I was concerned this cute book would be more fluff than substance. Thankfully, I trusted the high overall rating on Goodreads and was pleasantly surprised. This still qualifies as light reading but I learned far more about the concept of sisu and Finland than I expected to. The illustrations were a pleasant added touch. ( )
