A quick read of 90 pages, but packed with action and characters that are part and parcel of the noir genre. I did enjoy it!
Douglas King has worked hard to get where he is...almost at the top of the heap. It takes only one business transaction Of $500,000 to put him on the top of the food chain. His focus is business but he also has an attractive and loving wife and young son. Because of his determination and tenacity they live well in a big house with servants, expensive cars, clothes and the rest of the trimmings.
Sy and Eddie are two guys with a big plan to make it rich. A plan that involves the kidnapping of King's son and the handsome ransom they will demand for the boy's return. They feel that it is a no-fail plan. With $500,000 they can go far and live high.
Eddie's wife isn't keen on it, and neither are the cops who are called in on the case. Things really take a turn when Sy and Eddie find that they have kidnapped the wrong boy. They grabbed Jeff Reynolds, the chauffeur's son, and the chauffeur doesn't have the money top pay!
Tension builds about whether King will pay the ransom, if the boy will be returned alive, and will the cops be able to find out who the kidnappers are and where they are holding the boy.
This has been edited down but it does hold the atmosphere and characters from the original and is worth the quick read. ( )
