This short chapter book about three friends who share time travel adventures is a humorous (and slightly sneaky) way of learning about history, and will appeal to boys in 2nd through 4th grades. The three boys, Joe, Fred, and Sam, have a magical book that warps them through time and space, but has one major flaw: it usually disappears so that they can't get back home to Brooklyn. You Can't, But Genghis Khan is the first book in the series of chapter books (there are also graphic novels), and the trio warps back in time and space to Outer Mongolia to witness (and assist in) the rise to power of Temujin, aka Genghis Khan. Will they be able to find The Book, or will they get trapped in the thirteenth century forever, drinking fermented mare's milk? Plenty of bad puns and armpit-farting abound, making this a great snare for boys and reluctant readers. ( )
