After they imported hippies for their meat, the question becomes what do you do with them when they become the ultimate invasive species? Mix that with hoppers (their riders), a deadly swamp, and an even deadlier group of fighters and you have a great story. ( ) You know what the American Western genre needs? Hippos instead of horses. Brilliant! In an alternative universe America introduced one of the most dangerous animals on the planet, hippopotamus, to the marshlands of the south to try and alleviate the food shortage in the country. Things went wrong - hippos became feral. We follow a rag-tag bunch of criminals, con artists, and assassins trying to pull off an ambitious caper....er, operation. Shenanigans ensue. In all seriousness, I enjoyed this book more than I expected too. This story provides engaging characters and a fast-paced plot in a one of a kind setting. With the caveat that there is some gruesome violence, I would highly recommend this unique book. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

In 2017 Sarah Gailey made her debut with River of Teeth and Taste of Marrow, two action-packed novellas that introduced readers to an alternate America in which hippos rule the colossal swamp that was once the Mississippi River. Now readers have the chance to own both novellas in a single, beautiful volume.Years ago, in an America that never was, the United States government introduced herds of hippos to the marshlands of Louisiana to be bred and slaughtered as an alternative meat source. This plan failed to take into account some key facts about hippos: they are savage, they are fast, and their jaws can snap a man in two. By the 1890s, the vast bayou that was once America's greatest waterway belongs to feral hippos, and Winslow Houndstooth has been contracted to take it back. To do so, he will gather a crew of the damnedest cons, outlaws, and assassins to ever ride a hippo. American Hippo is the story of their fortunes, their failures, and his revenge.
