Just some notes to refresh my feeble little brain...I came across this title after watching Jenifer in a deleted scene from Better Things. I recognized her voice instantly but couldn't place her. She's Ruby Johnson on Black-ish! I don't do well with audio books but I guess she is the narrator of her audio book so I have to at least give it a try. OMG…I’m so glad I listened to this book in audio. Jenifer Lewis didn’t want to do a tell all book, but wanted to focus on her personal struggles and triumphs within herself. Dealing with Bipolar Disorder can be (as Ms Lewis puts it) “like your own personal jail cell” especially if unmedicated. My sister is also diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and has manic episodes, lashing out at family and loved ones. I saw so many parallels between Ms. Lewis and my sister. I appreciated her honesty, humor, and humility, and actually gave me some eyesight into a person dealing with this disorder. I adore her acting skills and her magnified persona. Jenifer Lewis is definitely “The Mother of Black Hollywood”. "Ain't nobody promised you a rose garden without nasty thorns!" Let me preface by saying I didnt read this, I listened to it. The audiobook is phenomenal. It is narrated by "The Mother" herself and she left nothing to the imagination. She was very open in this memoir. Her dialogue, her side notes, her comments were real and hilarious. I laughed with her, I shed a few tears. And most of all, I learned a few lessons. If you cannot handle profanity and "in your face" language then dont even attempt it. I highly recommend this memoir. The Mother of Black Hollywood: A Memoir I Picked Up This Book Because: I like Jennifer Lewis and I needed something to listen to on my road trip. The Story: I had NO idea that Jennifer has been in so many productions. Really I hadn’t given much thought to her at all beyond Aunt Helen and Ruby Johnson. She is so accomplished but she breaks it down to the real deal in this book. Not every win was easy and there were many challenges to overcome. She speaks candidly about her family, her relationships and her mental illness. I found her story fascinating. Jennifer has confidence, charisma and charm and is a star in every way. The "Mega Diva" and legendary star of Black-ish looks back on her memorable journey to fame and the unforgettable life lessons she learned along the way. Jenifer Lewis keeps it real in this provocative and touching memoir by a mid-western girl with a dream whose journey from poverty to Hollywood will move, shock, and inspire listeners. Told in the audacious voice her fans adore, Jenifer describes a road to fame made treacherous by dysfunction and undiagnosed mental illness, including a sex addiction. Yet, supported by loving friends and strengthened by "inner soldiers," Jenifer never stopped entertaining and creating. We watch as Jenifer develops icon status stemming from a series of legendary screen roles as the sassy, yet loveable, mama or auntie. And we watch as her emotional disturbances, culminating in a breakdown while filming The Temptations movie, launch her on a continuing search for answers, love, and healing. Written with no-holds-barred honesty, this gripping memoir is filled with insights gained through a unique life that offers a universal message: "Love yourself so that love will not be a stranger when it comes. "From her first taste of applause at five years old to landing on Broadway within eleven days of graduation and ultimately achieving success in movies, television and global concert halls, Jenifer reveals her outrageous life story with lots of humor, a few regrets and most importantly, unbridled joy. Candid, warm and wonderfully inspiring, The Mother of Black Hollywood intimately reveals the heart of a woman who lives life to the fullest. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |

Ms. Lewis' follow up, Walking in My Joy, is maybe more readable/enjoyable, with less oversharing (if you don't enjoy hearing about various sexual escapades, this isn't for you) and more relatable stories, but that doesn't mean that The Mother of Black Hollywood isn't also important and worth reading. The chapters run together after a while (the journey to stardom is a long one, as is the journey in dealing with mental health challenges), but I can't help but love Jenifer's larger-than-life personality as well as her talent in telling a humorous and entertaining story.
