A dour duke. A wistful wallflower. An impossible match.Jules, Sixth Duke of Dandridge disdains Society and all its trappings, preferring the country's solitude and peace. She dares not dream she can win a duke's heart any more than she hopes to escape the life of servitude imposed on her by an uncaring mother. Jemmah knows full well Jules is too far above her station now. Besides, his family has already selected his perfect duchess: a poised, polished, exquisite blueblood.A chance encounter reunites Jules and Jemmah, resulting in a passionate interlude neither can forget. In the first novella of the Seductive Scoundrels series, Miss Jemmah Dament is miserable and hiding in an unused parlor at her aunt’s London home. She’s spent the majority of her life in her cruel sister’s shadow, and both her sister and heartless mother treat Jemmah as nothing more than a servant. She only has her wealthy aunt, Theodora, as well as the Viscountess Lockhart and Theo’s mother-in-law to help her.
Jules, Duke of Dandridge, escapes all the matchmaking mamas at his beloved godmother’s birthday soirée and stumbles upon Jemmah in the parlor. Though they were good friends in childhood, they’d lost touch over the years. After their unexpected reunion, he quickly reassesses his views on not getting married.
Jemmah and Jules are wonderful characters. They’ve both suffered heartache at the hands of their families, especially poor Jemmah, but they aren’t cold and bitter. Though this sweet, clean romance story shows abuse and neglect, it also shows the heroine’s triumph in overcoming such abuse with her self-respect intact. There are a few minor typos, but I like Ms. Cameron’s writing style and the depth of emotions she puts into her characters.

Ok, so, of course I loved the Regency Regina Georges and the awful mother, but this was far too short and practically devoid of angst, aside from the sniping comments from the Mean Girls. Insta-love, really, though they’ve known each other for years (we don’t see any of their backstory), a couple sweet kisses but no steam, and just, like, no conflict. I kept waiting for there to be ANY obstacle thrown in the couple’s path, but everything just goes off without a hitch. Not to mention, she’s not actually plain, just has old and worn clothing? Just not my cup of tea, sadly, despite the excellent premise. ( )

Jules, Duke of Danridge, is trying to escape a party when he stumbles across a friend from his childhood, Jemmah Dament. Jemmah is the mistreated younger sister who slaves for her mother and older sister, only occasionally allowed out to a party. Their meeting leads to more as Jules decides Jemmah is the one for him.
This is a fairly short read, loosely based on an old fairy tale, Diamonds and Frogs, by Charles Perrault who also wrote Cinderella. The stories are somewhat similar.
This wasn't a bad story, but I didn't think it was good either. I didn't find the numerous odd similes humorous or realistic. That Jules is kissing and falling in love with Jemmah within five minutes of meeting her after ignoring her for long years was unbelievable. I felt the same about Jemmah's mistreatment - why didn't her aunt rescue her sooner if she had control of Jemmah's mother's finances? Why didn't we ever meet Jule's niece who is discussed a lot? I know this was a short story, but surely more time could have been spent on some development and made this a better story in the long run. I did like the author's explanations of how she chose the names for each character in the notes at the end. ( )

Apparently this story is a retelling of Charles Perrault’s classic tale “Toads and Diamonds”, which I’ve never heard of and therefore can’t compare the two. I can tell you that Collette Cameron’s story is heartwarming, poignant and endlessly funny.

I adored Jules and Jemmah and couldn’t wait to see them happy. They both had it hard and definitely deserved their happy ending.

If you love fairy tales and friends to lovers stories, you can’t miss this one. It’s a fast and delightful read with plenty of heart and humor.
